There is an abundance of promotional material hitting the market for Avengers: Infinity War. It all looks amazing, minus one key character. Where is Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in all of the promotional material for Avengers: Infinity War? He doesn’t even show up in the trailer. So is the Archer Avenger in the film at all?
According to directors Anthony and Joe Russo, Hawkeye is on a mysterious solo mission, but it is a mission that is vital to his character arc. So, is he in the film? Yes, but he will most likely not be in any of the big battles that we have glimpsed in the trailer.
At a recent press release, the Russo brothers spoke about their excitement for Hawkeye’s quest, although he will not be in any of the ensemble scenes in the movie:
“Hawkeye coming out of Civil War is in the same position that the Cap and Falcon are in at the end of that movie,” Joe Russo said. “And Ant Man. And coming into this movie, the characters who are on Cap’s side coming out of Civil War, some made certain decisions and others made other decisions that led to different paths and them dealing with oversight in this movie in a different way. So, Hawkeye’s on his own journey in this movie.”
“Yeah, he has a unique reaction to the Civil War situation that puts him in a special spot this film,” Anthony Russo added.
It was recently revealed that Hawkeye will sport the mohawk his character had in the comics. This will not be the only difference in the character. He will also be a little more advanced. He will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, but he will not partake in the big battle versus Thanos.
This change is ok, because Hawkeye says it himself in Age of Ultron, “”The city is flying … we’re fighting an army of robots … and I have a bow and arrow.” How much damage could that bow and arrow do to the Outriders, the Black Order, and Thanos? The Russo’s seem to answer that question with this move. Hawkeye will definitely be full-on Ronin in this film, mohawk and all!
The Russo’s want every character to have a chance to shine in Infinity War:
“There’s a lot of characters in these movies that have tones that they’re bringing from their own franchises. I think it’s a very unique film. I don’t think there are a lot of movies that have the kind of tone that this movie has, because it’s a combination of franchises. I don’t think we’ve ever seen that before, on this scale. It’s got a really unique tone to it. I think it’s propulsive. I would say it’s an adventure film, but it has elements of a… We were inspired by 90s crime films when we were working on the script, so it’s got an energy to it, a bit of a smash-and-grab energy.”
Hawkeye and the rest of the Avengers return to theaters in Avengers: Infinity War on April 27.
