Last week, Avatar director Jame Cameron sat down with Kelly Stinner and had a few choice words about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Cameron says that he didn’t like the film, citing that TFA was a “retrenchment” of Lucas’ saga. James Cameron is known for making films that not only become smash hits at the box office, but innovate the film industry. He is known for films such as Titanic and Avatar, both of which held box office records until The Force Awakens smash most of those numbers last December.
Now, the talented director has finally spoken about the film, and although his opinions are a bit vague, it is not hard to tell he didn’t like the film. In a recent interview video, Cameron danced around direct criticism of the TFA:
“Well, George Lucas is a friend of mine, and he and I were having a good conversation the other day about it. I don’t want to say too much about the film. I also have a lot of respect for J.J. Abrams, and I want to see where they’re taking it next. You know, see what they’re doing with it.”
This puts him in a bit of a hard place. Being friends with both directors, it is hard to be too critical of either filmmakers work. He elaborated a bit more about how each director handled the franchise, stating that:
“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination. Yeah, this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you’d seen before and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters so, for me, the jury’s out. I want to see where they go with it.”
When Will We Seen Avatar 2 or anything from James Cameron?
This interview comes in the wake of recent announcements that Cameron’s Avatar 2 has been pushed back to December 2018. But the director will not be done with the Avatar franchise after Avatar 2, he is now planning a total of four sequels. It appears as though the future will be full of visits to Pandora and its surrounding planetary system. Check out the full interview below:
