1st Official Trailer for X-Men’s ‘Dark Phoenix’ is Pretty Intense

Dark Phoenix, Twentieth Century Fox

The first official trailer for X-Men’s Dark Phoenix is here, and for lack of better words, its dark. It appears that Fox is taking a move from the Marvel handbook by not shying away from putting thier characters in real peril.

CAUTION: POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

The trailer is epic, to say the least. Can we take a moment to talk about how Fox basically tells us that Mystique will die really early in the film. Why would you do that?!

The trailer has a healthy amount of new footage, and amps up the threat for what looks to be the final X-Men film for Twentieth Century Fox. The trailer hints at the possible death of Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) early in the film.

Leaking such a big plot point in a trailer is a bold move. According to Simon Kinberg, no character is safe with this being the last X-Men film before Marvel takes the franchise over. In an interview with EW, Kingberg says that no character is safe:

“Well, the thought process behind that was to primarily show that this is a movie that is unlike other ‘X-Men’ movies. It’s a movie where shocking things happen, where intense, dramatic things happen.

People don’t just fall off buildings and dust themselves off and walk away.

There’s a reality to this movie and a consequence to this movie. Even more than that, it was to show that Jean/Dark Phoenix is genuinely a threat to everyone, including the X-Men.

I had a lot of emotions about it. I was obviously sad about it, as Jen’s friend, and also as a fan of Jen as an actress.

But I felt it was the strongest, most dramatic thing for the movie, and sometimes you have to make those kinds of hard decisions to service the larger story.

There are certainly other major casualties in this…

There was something about that sense of closure for the [X-Men], that sense of test, that sense of loss. It felt like not this is the end necessarily, but this is it for them.”
