3 Under the Radar Gems from ‘Multiverse of Madness’ director SAM RAIMI

A SIMPLE PLAN (1998)

A Simple Plan is a realized, often tense, and anxiety-ridden thriller. The film was a major step for Raimi’s career and one that really brought him further into the spotlight on a mainstream Hollywood level.

Raimi’s established in the horror genre at this point, but with A Simple Plan, he takes a more character-driven, dramatic approach.

The film tells the story of two brothers dealing with a moral and ethical dilemma. When the brothers take a multitude of money from a plane crash site, things go wrong. Each sees it as their ticket to build the best life possible for themselves.

As expected, trouble ensues as they learn more about where the money came from.

Apart from its great performances, most notably an Academy Award-nominated turn from Billy Bob Thornton, the narrative keeps you on the edge of your seat at every turn. This is done simply by showcasing the frustrations of various character decisions.

Not a single moment is wasted throughout its 2-hour runtime. It all unravels and culminates in a tense finale. You find yourself equally captivated and on edge. A Simple Plan leaves the viewer wishing they could reach into the narrative and shake some sense into these characters.

Apart from perhaps being Raimi’s most underrated film, it is also his best work in my humble opinion. This is one from Raimi that is not to be missed.

The film can be streamed on the Cinemax app.
