Sigourney Weaver Talks About Why ‘Avatar’ Will Get 4 Sequels

James Cameron’s Avatar sequel(s) has been in production hell for the better part of the last decade. When the original film hit theaters, it jump-started a 3D revolution. Few film have come close to the quality 3D that Cameron had in the first film. Films were converting to 3D in droves after it hit theaters. Cameron’s sequel is constantly going through transformations. Now it seems that there will be four sequels to Avatar.  Sigourney Weaver has nothing but praise for Cameron’s scope and story.

Avatar originally was only going to have 2 sequels, before expanding to the four that it’s getting now. Cameron will film 2 and 3 simultaneously, followed by 4 and 5 shortly after. In a recent interview with EW, Sigourney Weaver says that there is a good reason why there are so many sequels, and that Cameron’s overall theme is beautiful:

“There’s a very good reason why it turned out to be four sequels. Having read all four of them, I think they’re absolutely extraordinary and worth the wait. These films are very much about the peril of this beautiful planet, and [James Cameron] is continuing the same themes of greed and callousness of the corporations and plight of the indigenous people. At this point after a long and very satisfying career – I can’t believe it’s been forty years, but anyway – I’m very excited to be able to work on these four stories. I can really, really appreciate it.”

Pre-production has begun on the sequels, and a shooting date is set for September 25:

“It’s the most ambitious project by far I’ve ever been involved in, and the most moving, the most astonishing, beautiful. I think all of us who get to be a part of it is just in awe. When we see the artwork. It’s just incredible to be living now when we can bring this kind of film experience to the public. Because I think as much as ‘Avatar’ changed what people want in a film experience, this goes a hundred times farther.”

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore and Stephen Lang, are all set to return for the sequels.

Avatar 2 hits theaters on December 18, 2020.
