31 Nights of Horror: Watching a Scary Movie Every Day in October

The Exorcist is synonymous with the genre of Horror. It’s one of the movies that’s been spoofed and homaged in many Horror movies since. I was looking forward to my first time watching it… and I’m glad to say it didn’t disappoint.

It wasn’t what I was expecting but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. The Exorcist is a movie with a slow build, showing various subplots and brings them together by the third act. (a problem I had with The Amityville Horror)

It works well in this movie because there’s a payoff with all of them. Everything comes to a head during the exorcism where there are two Priests trying to save Regan (Linda Blair) from the Demon inside of her.

Whether it’s intentional, I laughed a lot at what the Demon said. It’s unexpected to hear a Demon saying rude things. In other works, Demons are usually just mean and angry, rather than aroused and riled up.

Poor Regan falls ill and the Doctors believe she’s mentally unstable. They want her to be put under surveillance in a State Hospital. However, her mother is against the idea and with it, a murder mystery unfolds.

A resident of the town is found dead but the only suspect to his death is Regan, and it isn’t until the end of the movie where we see how it could have happened.

The Exorcist is a movie I’ll be watching again so I can appreciate it more. For now, it’s a movie I’ll say lives up to its hype and should be watched by every Horror fan.
