Just on the heels of the film’s premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse, Warner Bros. Pictures drops the second trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. The film is adapted from the Earnest Cline novel of the same name. The book is a plethora of pop culture references, that features and Indiana Jones-styled virtual easter egg hunt.

Check out the second trailer for Ready Player One below:

The film will take place almost entirely in the virtual world of the Oasis, after the world has become an over-populated slum.

The story set in a virtual world called Oasis in which a teenager (Tye Sheridan) finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the enigmatic founder James Halliday (Mark Rylance) of the game dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize. When a mysterious user finds the first big key to the puzzle, the rest of the world is out to find him in the virtual and real world.

will Parzival and his companions finish the puzzle in time to save the Oasis from reedy corporations trying to buy their way to the prize?

Although I loved the novel, the movie trailers are overwhelming with pop references, for me to full appreciate each one. Another notable difference between the novel and the film is the subtraction of every one of Steven Speilberg’s film references. This is a little odd seeing that he is directing the film. These trailers are full of their own easter eggs as well. It is sending the internet into a frenzy trying to decipher exactly what they all mean.

RPO stars Tye Sheridan, Mark Rylance, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller and Ben Mendelsohn. You only need to look at the  trailers to grasp the overwhelming nature of the pop references in this film. You can bet that only a few references have been shown so far. We have already see references to Overwatch, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Back to the Future, The Iron Giant, Lord of the Rings, DC Comics, Ultraman, Akira, Joust, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which the book was heavily inspired by.
