With the recent success of Marvel Studios Deadpool and Wolverine, talks about future potential spinoffs are starting to bubble to the surface.
One surprise inclusion in the film was Channing Tatum suited up as a comic-accurate X-Man, Gambit. Tatum fought hard for the last decade to bring this character to life on the big screen, much to no avail. Tatum tried, but the film never gained traction.
First announced in 2014, the film was set to bring the Cajun card-throwing hero, Remy LeBeau, to the big screen. Tatum’s passion for the role was evident, with the actor deeply involved in the film’s development, including its tone, script, and direction.
However, “Gambit” faced countless delays and setbacks despite numerous attempts. A revolving door of directors, script rewrites, and the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney in 2019 put the project in limbo.
The character of Gambit, known for his charm, mischievous nature, and kinetic energy manipulation, appeared in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” portrayed by Taylor Kitsch. Still, fans were eager for Tatum’s take on the character.
The nail-in-the-coffin for the film hit hard when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019. Variety brought up the idea of a stand-alone Gambit film to Tatum, and he hints that the fire for the character isn’t quite dead:
“I sure hope so. From your mouth to God’s ears. Write it into existence, my friend. Please. Of course I’ve said it [to Marvel]. I’ve been saying I want it for the last ten years.“It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God.”
Tatum also thanked Ryan Renold for the opportunity on his Twitter account. Tatum graces big screens this week in Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut Blink Twice.
