Supergirl Could Cost Warner Bros. More Than $100 Million as Box Office Struggles Continue

Warner Bros. Discovery may have another box office challenge on its hands.

After arriving in theaters with a softer-than-expected debut, Supergirl now faces an uphill battle to become a financial success. Early industry projections suggest the film could ultimately lose the studio more than $100 million if its theatrical performance continues on its current trajectory.

The movie stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and marks another major chapter in the rebooted DC Universe. Expectations were high following the success of Superman, but Supergirl has struggled to generate the same level of audience interest.

The film earned approximately $68 million worldwide during its opening weekend, including roughly $38 million from domestic theaters. Those numbers fall well below what most modern superhero films need to launch a profitable theatrical run.

While Warner Bros. has never publicly disclosed the film’s full financial picture, reports place Supergirl‘s production budget at around $170 million. Once worldwide marketing, advertising, and distribution expenses are factored in, the studio’s total investment likely climbs well beyond that figure.

Movie theaters also keep a significant portion of ticket sales. This means studios receive only part of every dollar earned at the box office. Because of that revenue split, large-scale blockbusters typically need to generate several times their production budget before turning a theatrical profit.

That reality has fueled speculation that Supergirl could finish its theatrical run well below the point needed to break even.

Competition has only made matters more difficult. The summer movie season remains packed with major releases, leaving audiences with no shortage of blockbuster options. Family films, action movies, and highly anticipated franchise releases have all competed for attention. This makes it increasingly difficult for Supergirl to build momentum after its opening weekend.

Critical reception has also landed somewhere in the middle. Reviews have praised Milly Alcock’s performance as Kara Zor-El, with many critics pointing to her as one of the film’s strongest assets. However, reactions to the screenplay, pacing, and overall story have proven far more divided.

Audience scores have been more encouraging than critic reviews, suggesting that moviegoers have responded more positively than professional reviewers. Even so, strong audience reactions alone may not be enough to overcome a modest opening if ticket sales continue to decline over the coming weeks.

Despite the disappointing start, Supergirl‘s financial story is still being written. The film has additional opportunities to generate revenue through premium video-on-demand, digital purchases, physical media, streaming, and television licensing after its theatrical run concludes.

Those revenue streams can significantly reduce losses, although they rarely transform a disappointing theatrical release into a major financial success.

For now, estimates that Supergirl could lose Warner Bros. more than $100 million remain just that—estimates. The studio has not confirmed any projected losses, and the movie still has time to add to its worldwide total.

Whether Supergirl ultimately becomes a financial disappointment or stages an unexpected comeback will depend on its staying power in theaters during the weeks ahead. At the moment, however, the film appears to face a much steeper climb than Warner Bros. likely anticipated.
