After decades of speculation, false starts, and nostalgic hopes, Goonies 2 may finally be inching toward reality. Longtime fans of the 1985 classic know the sequel has been discussed for nearly 40 years. Various versions stalled before gaining real momentum.

But according to recent comments from Ke Huy Quan, the project is in one of its most promising development phases yet.

While promoting his role in Disney’s Zootopia 2, Quan revealed that he recently spoke with Steven Spielberg, who remains deeply enthusiastic about reviving the beloved adventure franchise. Quan said the renewed energy behind the sequel first came to him directly from Spielberg during a recent event—an indication that the film’s original creative pillars are actively engaged once again.

Spielberg’s involvement has long been viewed as essential for the sequel to move forward, making this update especially encouraging.

Adding further weight, Quan confirmed that Goonies screenwriter Chris Columbus is also developing the project. Columbus helped shape the tone and heart of the original film. He has reportedly been working closely with Spielberg on guiding the sequel’s direction.

According to Quan, the writer has already turned in a second draft of the script. He also states that the creative team is “really happy” with its current trajectory. This is one of the first concrete indicators in years that the film is progressing. At least beyond casual discussions and into meaningful development.

Quan expressed strong enthusiasm about reprising his role and reuniting with the original cast—his “Goonies brothers and sisters.” He shared the following update:

“I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event, and he was so excited. We try to do it, so let’s manifest it. I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it.

“This time, Chris Columbus and Spielberg are developing it, we have an incredible writer. I mean, I read he turned in the second draft and they’re really happy about it. I was telling Fortune (Feimster, Zootopia 2 co-star), I said we’re gonna do it. I want her to be in it. I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters.”

Goonies 2 has not yet received a formal greenlight. Quan’s comments mark the most substantive progress update fans have heard in years. The long-awaited continuation is closer than ever to becoming a reality, considering Columbus and Spielberg are active about the sequel.

For fans who have held onto the motto “Goonies never say die,” this might finally be the moment that proves them right.
