Battleworld ranks among the most important locations in Marvel Comics. However, the name describes two different worlds from separate Secret Wars storylines.
Marvel introduced the original Battleworld in 1984. The company later reinvented the concept during 2015’s Secret Wars. That newer version could heavily influence the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Beyonder Creates the Original Battleworld
The Beyonder created the first Battleworld after discovering Earth and its superhuman population. He constructed the planet using pieces taken from several worlds. The Beyonder then transported Marvel’s greatest heroes and villains onto its surface.
The heroes included Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor and members of the X-Men. Doctor Doom, Magneto, Doctor Octopus, Ultron and other villains joined the opposing side.
The Beyonder promised to grant the winners their greatest desires. However, Doctor Doom refused to remain another participant in the contest. Instead, he found a way to steal the Beyonder’s cosmic power.
Doom briefly became nearly omnipotent, although he struggled to control his new abilities. The Beyonder eventually reclaimed his power and returned everyone to Earth.
Spider-Man unknowingly brought home an important piece of Battleworld. He discovered a machine that created a new black costume for him. However, the costume later revealed itself as a living alien symbiote. That discovery eventually led to the creation of Venom.
The Incursions Destroy the Marvel Multiverse
Writer Jonathan Hickman completely reimagined Battleworld during the 2015 Secret Wars event. This version emerged after the Marvel multiverse suffered destructive events called Incursions.
An Incursion occurred when two alternate Earths began occupying the same location. Both universes faced destruction unless someone destroyed one of the colliding planets.
The Illuminati desperately searched for another solution but repeatedly failed. Reed Richards, Black Panther, Namor and Doctor Strange became central players during the crisis. Meanwhile, Doctor Doom investigated the mysterious forces responsible for destroying the multiverse.
Doom discovered that the Beyonders had placed versions of Molecule Man throughout the multiverse. Each Molecule Man functioned as a living bomb capable of destroying his universe. The Beyonders planned to detonate them simultaneously and erase everything.
Doctor Doom Saves the Remains of Reality
Doom worked with Doctor Strange and the original Molecule Man, Owen Reece. Together, they confronted the Beyonders and stole their enormous power.
Their plan disrupted the destruction but could not save the complete multiverse. Only scattered pieces of different realities survived the final Incursions.
Doom combined those fragments and created a single patchwork planet called Battleworld. He ruled the new world as its unquestioned god. Doom called himself God Emperor Doom and controlled the planet through fear, religion and overwhelming power.
How Battleworld Operates
Battleworld contained separate territories called domains. Each domain preserved part of a destroyed reality and featured its own heroes, villains and history. These regions included worlds filled with zombies, Hulks, Ultrons and alternate versions of familiar characters.
A massive structure called the Shield separated the most dangerous territories from the rest of Battleworld. The wall protected civilization from zombies, Ultron drones and the Annihilation Wave. Doom punished serious criminals by sending them beyond the Shield.
The Thor Corps enforced Doom’s laws across the planet. This police force included numerous versions of Thor from destroyed universes. Doctor Strange served Doom as Battleworld’s sheriff and helped maintain order between the domains.
Doom Replaces Reed Richards
Doom created a royal family from people he could not save during the Incursions. He made Sue Storm his wife and raised Franklin and Valeria Richards as his children.
Most residents believed Reed Richards had died with the previous multiverse. Doom erased or altered memories to support his version of history. He effectively placed himself at the center of Reed’s former family.
Doom’s choices revealed the personal weaknesses beneath his godlike appearance. He saved fragments of reality but rebuilt existence around his jealousy of Reed.
The Multiverse Survivors Reach Battleworld
Doom’s world began collapsing after two survival vessels reached Battleworld. Reed Richards built one vessel to protect selected heroes from the final Incursion. The other carried survivors from Marvel’s Ultimate Universe.
The survivors included Reed Richards, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and Black Panther. They remembered the old multiverse and understood that Doom had rewritten reality. Their arrival threatened every lie supporting Doom’s kingdom.
Doctor Strange eventually turned against Doom and scattered the survivors across Battleworld. Doom killed Strange for his betrayal. However, Strange’s actions allowed the heroes to organize resistance throughout the domains.
Several regions soon rebelled against Doom’s rule. The uprising created enough chaos for Reed to confront his longtime rival.
Reed Richards Defeats God Emperor Doom
The conflict eventually brought Reed and Doom together for one final confrontation. Reed argued that Doom had used stolen power to create a broken world.
Doom had saved reality, but he rebuilt it around his insecurities. Doom finally admitted that Reed could have created something better.
Molecule Man then transferred the Beyonders’ power from Doom to Reed. Reed used that power to rebuild the multiverse. Franklin Richards helped create new universes while Molecule Man stabilized them.
The victory did not simply restore everything exactly as it existed before. Reed received an opportunity to create a new multiverse from the remains of the old one.
What Battleworld Could Mean for the MCU
Marvel Studios may combine elements from both comic versions of Battleworld. Avengers: Doomsday could establish the Incursions and show Doctor Doom attempting to save existence. Avengers: Secret Wars could then take place on the world he creates.
This approach would unite characters from different Marvel franchises without giving them one original universe. The Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men could occupy separate Battleworld domains. Doom could rule over them while hiding the truth about their destroyed realities.
Battleworld also gives Marvel a logical way to reshape the MCU. The studio could combine selected characters and histories into one reconstructed universe after Secret Wars. That outcome could introduce the X-Men permanently while preserving established MCU heroes.
In the comics, Battleworld represents both Doom’s greatest victory and his deepest failure. He saves pieces of existence but builds the new world around his weaknesses.
That conflict makes Battleworld more than a setting for superhero battles. It becomes Doctor Doom’s attempt to prove that he deserves to rule everything.
