‘The Last Jedi’ Director Rian Johnson Addresses Kylo Ren Scar Controversy

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm

Star Wars fans are a spirited bunch, pouring over every cell of footage looking for the slightest change or hidden gem that can be found between every film in the Star Wars universe. This doesn’t make you lot a bad bunch, it just means that fans want continuity, and any shift in that needs answers. This is exactly why the Kylo Ren scar controversy has grown legs. Director Ryan Johnson has confirmed that he did shift Kylo Ren’s scar on Adam Driver for The Last Jedi.

At the end of The Force Awakens, during the duel between Kylo Ren and Rey, Rey slices Kylo’s face with her lightsaber. This leaves a pretty horrific would on the villain, but when the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit, keen fans noticed that the scar has moved. The would in The Force Awakens runs down the bridge of Kylo’s nose and down his cheek. In the first trailer for The Last Jedi the scar appears a lot smaller, and over his right eye. It is a small shift, but one fans needed an answer for.

In a fan response via Twitter, Johnson confirmed the move, and gave his motivations for doing so:

“It was my decision to slightly adjust it, and that was my justification. It honestly looked goofy running straight up the bridge of his nose.”

Simply put, because he could. The shift is minimal, but allows the young Dark Side user to keep a piece of his earlier appearance. In other news, actor John Boyega told MTV that he knows about the Poe/Finn fan fiction and fan art that exists portraying the duo in romantic fashion. Poe Dameron is portrayed on-screen by Oscar Isaacs. Boyega offers a hilarious response to the fan-created works:

“I know about FinnPoe. There’s many erotic images that I have received, and I appreciate all support for Finn and his butt cheeks.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters this December.
