Lara Croft, the Tomb Raider, has been popular ever since her release in 1996. The latest game in the Tomb Raider series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, came out last September, receiving mixed reviews.
It isn’t the only Tomb Raider media to receive mixed reviews though.
In 2018 Alicia Vikander lead the new reboot movie of the character. It decided to take a more realistic approach to the character while using story beats from the 2013 reboot game.
After its release, it garnered mixed reviews for its focus on Lara’s inability to let her father go and removing the supernatural element the series is known for.
Its Box Office numbers also disappointed, only managing to make $274,650,803. This lead to fans believing Vikander would sadly never get another chance to be the Tomb Raider.
However, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter a writer has been hired to write the sequel.Amy Jump, the writer of Free Fire, will be writing the Tomb Raider sequel but there is no word on the Director yet.
Roar Uthaug directed Tomb Raider (2018) and while used sequences from the game stunningly, GK Films may want to look for someone else to helm.
Given Amy Jump’s history of working often with Ben Wheatley maybe he will be their next choice. However, it would be good to see a female Director such as Rachel Talalay (Tank Girl / Doctor Who) take over.
There are no rumors on who will return, except Alicia Vikander, who will be returning to the role. Given how the previous film finished it seems Nick Frost, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Daniel Wu could return as well.
Also, with Lara sporting her signature ponytail and dual handguns, it seems she will be accurate to the original games.
Whatever happens with this movie, it’s good news for fans of Tomb Raider to see Vikander take on the evil organization, Trinity. Hopefully, though the movie will do a better job with Trinity’s conclusion than Shadow of the Tomb Raider did.
