There are some quotes that come along that just leave you scratching your head. Such is the case with Anthony Hopkins latest comments about his Transformers: The Last Knight director, Michael Bay. I am not here to argue how I feel about Bay, although I think that Transformers is a bit of a mess. I will still sit in the theaters to have a few pints and gorge on popcorn while seeing each Cybertronian film. It’s baffling at how a star such as Hopkins would give praise to a director who is known for including over-abundant explosions in his films.
Hopkins has worked with plenty of the industries best directors in the past, but to include Bay in that group is intriguing. When Hopkins signed on to be in The Last Knight, it seemed like such an odd choice for the actor. Is he just checking off a bucket list of directors to work with before he retires?
In an interview with Yahoo Movies, Hopkins has nothing but praise for Michael Bay’s skill as a director, saying:
“He [Bay] was telling me about the work he did on [the Transformers bots] – how he would refine them and go into the special effects guys and design them and get all the details of light on metal and all that. He told me all that at breakfast before I started on the film. I thought ‘This guy’s a genius. He really is.’ He’s the same ilk as Oliver Stone and Spielberg and Scorsese. Brilliance. Savants, really, they are. He’s a savant.”
This praise of Bay is surprising, considering critics are extremely harsh of his shoddy camera work, sound editing, and film directions. The only shining star of Bay’s recent career was 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. A film that was nothing short of spectacular. There are a few things that Bay does well. His films are technically over-complicated. His shot composition usually has too many things going on in the shot to notice, and are only seen upon additional viewings. Does Hopkins praise mean that The Last Knight will be a classic in the making? Probably not, but we will have to wait to find out.
