Review: ‘The Northman’ is a Visceral, Poetic Blockbuster that Will Blow You Away
Before we get into the epic beauty that is The Northman, this review is spoiler-free.
This was my most anticipated film of 2022. Robert Eggers is one of the best working filmmakers in the industry today. He takes the Hollywood rulebook, tosses it in the trash, and does things on his terms.
The Northman‘s easily his most ambitious project to date and required the largest budget of any film Eggers has made. It utilizes visual effects, epic set pieces, and vibrant, gritty filming locations.
Everything’s done well.
The Northman‘s the best film I’ve seen in 2022. We just don’t see high-concept films like this anymore. This very much feels like one of those epic, brutal 80s fantasy films, but it’s done with today’s technology and abilities.
The storytelling is poetic, the battle sequences are visceral, and the language sounds like you’re actually experiencing what things were like at the time of the setting. It’s purely captivated. Forgive me for sounding pretentious, but this is what blockbuster cinema should be.
I would highly recommend The Northman to anyone because it is an amazing film that gives us a type of blockbuster we have not seen in a long time.
There are also a few things to take note of:
This film’s not for the faint of heart. It is BRUTAL with capital letters. The violence is graphic, but the Vikings were not exactly known for their compassion and friendliness. The Northman explores the Viking’s nature and tactics against their enemies.
If you are sensitive to coldhearted, ruthless violence, this might prove a little bit of a tough film. It’s not just the graphic visuals, but the context of a lot of the violence and brutality that occurs on-screen throughout the narrative.
Nonetheless, this was an incredible film. I’ve been looking for this visceral experience in cinema coupled with a high-concept blockbuster. The Northman deserves multiple viewings.
