Aquaman scriptwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick updates the upcoming sequel to Jason Momoa’s fantastic stand alone film, and gives a brief update on the spinoff on The Trench.
The scribe held a Q&A session on his social media account today. With the state of news coming from Hollywood hitting the brakes, the session was a welcomed change of pace.
Johnson-McGoldrick started by talking about the status of the upcoming Spinoff focusing on the Trench, the mysterious ocean creatures from the deepest part of the ocean.
The Trench is one of the most-mysterious Atlantean Kingdoms. The creatures appear in one big scene in the Jason Momoa-led first film. The sequel’s supposed to take place in between the events of the first and second films in the franchise.
According to Johnson-McGoldrick, the spinoff’s still in the plans, but the “pieces of this is still being worked out.” It sounds as though the film’s in a holding pattern awaiting a story direction. If the studio wants to hold the current schedule, something needs to happen soon.
He goes on to talk about the sequel to Aquaman which drops in theaters in 2022. So, will the sequel follow one storyline from the comics? According to Johnson-McGoldrick:
“We’re not taking any one particular comic book story and adapting it, but if you want to know the vibe we’re going for, pick up pretty much any Silver Age story featuring Black Manta.
It [the script] is going good! I’m texting with [James Wan] about the draft of the script right now — I think you’re gonna dig it.”
The sequel sees the return of minor villain Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and many others.
As soon as additional details drop for the film we will get them to you.
