Review – Millarworld’s ‘The Magic Order Vol 2 #6’

The Magic Order is about the witches and wizards protecting the world from nefarious threats. With a script by Mark Millar and art from Stuart Immonen, the second volume focuses on the Korne family. They’re looking for revenge on the Magic Order after defeating their ancestors thousands of years ago. Sadly, this is the final instalment in the second volume. Thankfully, there’s a third volume coming this May.

However, before that happens, let’s take a moment to appreciate the work done by everyone else at Millarworld: David Curiel (Colourist), Clem Robins (Letterer), Melina Mikulic (Design and Production), Frances Mullen and Sarah Unwin (Editorial Production Managers), Lucy Millar (CEO) and Stuart Immonen and Greg Tocchini (Cover Artists). Thank you for a fantastic second volume.

Also, don’t forget another Millarworld comic recently finished. King of Spies is another spellbinding story from Mark Millar and you can see our review for the last issue here.

The Magic Order Vol 2 #6 opens where the previous issue finishes. The Magic Order don’t have their powers while the Korne family controls a dark genie. With this power, they’re able to remake the world in their image. This is also a mirror to the failure of the Korne ancestors when the genie left them. Furthermore, that past is explored slightly more and gives new context to what happened.

If anything, it gives a good excuse to go back to the first issue of volume 2. Trust me, doing so will make this issue even more satisfying.

There’s a lot to unpack in the bumper 40-page issue. When you think you know where the story’s going, you don’t. Mark’s script makes you question everything until the very last page, and even then you’re still wondering what comes next. The Magic Order 2 Vol 6 is a satisfying finale that’ll make you fall in love with these characters more than already. I know Cordelia Moonstone is one of my favorite characters from any media.

The Magic Order Vol 2 #6‘s art is from Stuart Immonen. love the way he creates the magic spells. The juxtaposition of the dark backgrounds and light magic creates a beautiful synergy. This is especially true during a pivotal moment bringing a character to the forefront.

There’re two moments like this. The other time blends characters into the background while one is at the forefront, being lit by this magic. It’s as if this character’s coming out of their darkness and accepting the light.

Speaking of characters, the art feels like one in its own right. There’s a distinct voice that brings not just the cast but the backgrounds and spells to life.

Well, this is it. The Magic Order Vol 2 #6 is the last of this volume. It’s tackled addiction, self-confidence and vengeance, to name a few, creating a rich story. While I’ve loved the main story, it’s either Cordelia’s grapple with her new position or Francis’ addiction. Wherever The Magic Order goes next I don’t know but I’ll be along for the ride. Volume 3 releases in May.

Until then, The Magic Order Vol 2 #6 hits the shelves on Wednesday the 30th of March 2022.
