Warner Bros. Pictures and Alcon Entertainment have announced a release date for the upcoming sequel to the sci-fi cult classic, Blade Runner. Blade Runner 2 will hit theaters on January 12, 2018. The film will see the return of Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, and will be accompanied by Ryan Gosling.
According to Variety, , Blade Runner 2 is scheduled for release over the Martin Luthor King Jr. holiday weekend. Will the film pack theaters full of fans hoping that Ridley Scott can once again capture a bit of magic on the screen, although Scott will only be serving as executive producer on the film. Shooting is scheduled to begin in July, and heading up the film is director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario).
The sequel will be set decades into the future from the original, and will try to capture the essence that made the original great. In Blade Runner, Rick Decker battles with whether he is a human or a replicant, a question that the film never quite answers. This ambiguity is what has made BR a classic cult hit. Fans have long pondered this question, and Villeneuve has a statement for fans concerned about the sequel (via CinemaBlend), “The thing I must say is that I love mystery. I love shadows. I love doubts. I would just want to say to the fans that we will take care of that mystery. I will take care of it.”
Can Blade Runner 2 succeed at the box office during a time that is usually reserved for bad films? There have been few films become hits with an early year release, 50 Shades of Grey, and Deadpool are a couple that come to mind. Fans have shown that they are willing to come out in droves during the early part of the year, if we can get a great film.
