Director Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns) has issued a stern statement in anticipation of an upcoming Esquire Magazine article. The article in question appears to revisit sexual misconduct allegations brought against the filmmaker in the past.
Singer wasted no time to lash back at the resurrected allegations the article focuses on. The article will likely drop the same week that Bohemian Rhapsody, the Queen biopic film hits theaters. Warner Brothers fired Singer from the directors’ chair of Rhapsody near the end of shooting. Singer addresses the past accusations directly on his Instagram:
“I have known for some time that Esquire magazine may publish a negative article about me. They have contacted my friends, colleagues and people I don’t even know. In today’s climate where people’s careers are being harmed by mere accusations, what Esquire is attempting to do is a reckless disregard for the truth, making assumptions that are fictional and irresponsible.
This article will attempt to rehash false accusations and bogus lawsuits. This article will misuse quotes from ‘sources’ that will claim to have ‘intimate’ knowledge of my personal life. It will also attempt to establish guilt by association simply because of people I’ve either known or met in the past. They will be attempting to tarnish a career I’ve spent 25 years to build… I will comment further on this if necessary.”
Singer will still get directing credit for the film, although Dexter Fletcher took over duties. Singer overcame rape accusations in 2003, and assault charges in 2014. Michael Egan later apologized for his assault allegations, stating they were not true.
