If the 1980s film Labyrinth isn’t in your top 20 list, then there is something wrong with you. A rumored sequel has been in the works for a decade, and it’s a classic. Much to everyone’s surprise, it’s getting a sequel. So buckle-up and get ready, the script is finished for the sequel!
In a recent interview with Fandango, director Fede Alvarez spoke about his film and where it falls in the chronology of the storyline. Rumors were that the film would be a reboot of the franchise that wasn’t a box office success but became a cult classic. It’s a direct sequel to the original film:
I was actually having lunch yesterday with Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project. We’re very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can’t tell you much more about it… but we have a script, and we’re very excited about it so we’ll see where that goes. Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they’re larger than life. But that’s one of the projects that I’m very excited about.
According to Alvarez, he’s been busy with The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Although L2 isn’t a focus for the director, with the script getting the green light, this may change. Although this doesn’t mean that the script is final, it does mean that Guardians of the Galaxy scribe Nicole Perlman is satisfied.
The news alone is enough to get anyone excited. There really is already a built-in audience for the sequel, so making something at this point is a no-brainer. Labyrinth is a Jim Henson classic, and one that solidified the puppetmaker into Hollywood history.
