In Doctor Sleep, Ewan McGregor is an older Danny Torrence, riddled by mental and addiction problems. He hasn’t used his ability to ‘shine’ in a long time. He begins to use his abilities to soothe the aging residents of a nursing home as they pass away.
In an interview with Coming Soon, Flanagan says The Shining is a story about addiction, while Doctor Sleep is about recovery.

According to Flanagan, the team tried to honor not only the Kubrick
Doctor Sleep isn’t the first Stephen King adaptation handled by Flanagan. He also adapted King’s Gerald’s Game for Netflix.
Dan Torrance remains traumatized by the sinister events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child.
His hope for a peaceful existence soon becomes shattered when he meets Abra. She is a teen who shares his extrasensory gift of the “shine.” Together, they form an unlikely alliance to battle the True Knot.
True Knot is a cult whose members try to feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.
