Disney dropped a bombshell today, announcing that a completely-new Star Wars trilogy is in development at Lucasfilm. The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson will structure the new trilogy with the help of long-time collaborator Ram Bergman. The news shocked fans and media alike. What will the new trilogy cover?
According to a new statement from the Star Wars website, Johnson will also write and direct the first film in the new Star Wars trilogy. President of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy has complete confidence in Johnson moving forward, stating:
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
In a recent statement, Johnson and Bergman said:
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
The announcement brings and immediate flow of questions about where the new trilogy will take us. Does this mean that the Skywalker saga will conclude with the current trilogy (which The Last Jedi is the second film in)? Will it focus on Jedi, rogues, space pirates, or mirror the Knights of the Old Republic games? There are so many directions a new trilogy could go.
Disney has signed a deal with Rian Johnson to develop “a brand new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy” says Bob Iger, presumably coming after 2020. Whoa!
