Mark Hamill Denies that Luke Turns to the Dark Side in ‘The Last Jedi’

Rumors are running rampant in the final run-up to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In a recent promotional release, Luke Skywalker appears on a glass that should only feature Dark Side users. Is this a hint that the famous Jedi has shifted allegiance in Rian Johnson’s film, or a simple marketing blunder? According to Mark Hamill, fans shouldn’t fear that Luke will be turning Dark in Last Jedi.

In a recent interview with Disney Rewards Insider, Mark Hamill shuts down the rumor that Jedi Master Skywalker has gone Dark, but that he has “lost confidence in his ability to make good choices.” Hamill goes onto say:

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices. It haunts him to the core. But he hasn’t gone to the dark side. This isn’t an evil version of him. But it’s still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It’s a real challenge.

According to Hamill’s comments, this will be a very different Luke Skywalker than fans are used to seeing. The events leading up to The Last Jedi have molded the Jedi Master. Whether this is a shift for the better or not is something we will all have to wait to find out.

In ‘The Last Jedi’ The First Order is regrouping after the destruction of their star system weapon Starkiller Base, poised to strike back at the heart of the Rebellion. Smoke completes Kylo Ren’s training in the Dark Side of the Force, while Rey begins her Jedi training with famous Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. But will her abilities in the Force and power potential be too much for the aging Jedi to bear? Will he refuse to complete Rey’s training for fear of what she may become?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 14.
