Although any word about the upcoming DC movie Aquaman has been lost in the eclipse of a dismal Justice League, a few new morsels are beginning to make it to the light. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman is more of a smart-ass in JL, and it will be nice to see him when he gets his own film. Exactly what happens in that film is still up in the air. A recent statement by Dolph Lundgren confirms a big change from comic roots.
In a recent interview with the Las Vegas Review Journal, Lundgren talks about playing King Nerius (a rival undersea kingdom Xebel). He states that in film, Mera will be his daughter, who is trying to convince the King to join Atlantis:
It is good to be king. Basically, I try to keep the peace down there along with Amber Heard, who plays my daughter. She’s trying to convince me to join the right side. Then you have Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother. We’re trying to avoid war between the surface [dwellers] and the people of Atlantis.
It is a big change, because in the comics Nerius was not Mera’s father. It makes you wonder what other changes were made to the core story for the film. Check out the synopsis for the film below:
“Aquaman (Momoa) is the King of the Seven Seas. Leader of Atlantis, he is caught between the surface world constantly ravaging the seas and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt. Aquaman is committed to protecting the entire world. This film is part of WB’s shared DC cinematic universe.”
The synopsis describes Arthur Curry as a brooding, reluctant King. This may be how DC plans on giving him the depth needed to carry the whole film. In Justice League, Curry was a man full of bro-tastic one-liners and comedic puns. The film will have to transition the character, and show us how Curry earns the right to be called the King of the Seven Seas. On another note, this could mean what the Justice League poster meant, when it revealed Momoa’s look and said Unite the Seven. It was believed to mean unite the League, but the film didn’t have 7 heroes. Some assumed that at one time Green Lantern was supposed to be included in the film, making the hero total 7.
Aquaman hits theaters on December 21.
