Get Ready for More ‘Ghostbusters’ Sequels

Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters hits theaters around the world this Friday. In the wake of the controversy surrounding this film, we find out that if the film does well, we can expect more sequels. Well, no shit. In today’s Hollywood landscape, if a film does well and there is no sequel planned, something is wrong.

This past weekend, the world première of Ghostbusters took place at the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. The theater was filled with the cast and the crew of the film, including producer Amy Pascal who let us in on a little secret. In an interview with THR on the red carpet, Pascal said that if audiences love the film, expect more sequels:

“I have waited for this moment for a year. It’s going to be endless. People are going to love this movie so much that’s they’re going to demand more and more.”

In light of her pizzazz about the film, critics are beginning to screen the film, and the reviews are mixed at best. Some praise the film for the comedy and its scare factor, while others trash the film for its inability to step out from beyond the shadow of the original Ghostbusters films. Many are saying that the film is yet another watered-down summer blockbuster in the wake of a lackluster blockbuster season.

The Criticisms are Good for the Film?

Besides the reviews, the film has made headlines over the last few weeks due to the changes that scriptwriters made to the cast and the direction of the franchise. Those that have criticized the film have become labelled mysogynists and sexist. Hopefully, after this coming weekend, that argument will be squashed. According to Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman, the negative commentary about the film has actually helped the reboot by marketing the film:

“All that stuff has been great. It’s been great for the movie. The movie is a comedy, an entertaining comedy, but it is also now a real important part of the social conversation and you don’t usually get to do both of those things.”

What will come of the Ghostbusters rebooted franchise? There is no telling at this point, but one thing is for certain, the fate of the sequels are in your hands. If audiences like the film, then you can expect more to come. If audiences pan the film, then this might sadly be our last Ghostbusters movie.
