Why Haven’t We Gotten A ‘Black Widow’ Movie Yet?

For years, Black Widow has been one of the most-neglected characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only is she not scheduled for a film anywhere in the foreseeable future, but she has also rarely gotten action figures or other MCU memorabilia. It is a topic that has come under fire by groups wanting a stand-alone Black Widow film, and groups who want Marvel to give us more female superheroes to stand with Iron Man and Captain America.

We won’t have to wait long for Marvel to give us a female-driven superhero film, Captain Marvel is slotted for a 2019 release. Jessica Jones is another female-centric Marvel project, but the protestors want a blockbuster film. Why can’t the first female superhero Marvel introduced get her own film?

In the past, this topic has been discussed by members of the MCU, along with (the big man himself) Kevin Feige. They all say that Marvel is not ignoring Black Widow, rather there is a bigger plan at work here, and when they are done with this story arc, then Marvel can focus on other films. In their defense, Marvel has started to address the severe lack of Black Widow merchandise.

Recently, Scarlett Johansson (the actress who plays Black Widow on the big screen) addressed the issue head on with Total Film (via GamesRadar). She says that Marvel is interested in making a Black Widow film, but it’s not possible with their current film schedule and hers as well:

“I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible. I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself. Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead.

I also have a lot of things that I want to do. If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it.

Black Widow film will have to wait a while, Marvel has their hands full until 2020. Does this mean that she will get her own film sometime shortly after that? We will have to just wait and see.

Marvel’s next movie is the James Gunn-led Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 slated to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
