If Jude Law is Yon-Rogg, will Mar-Vell be in ‘Captain Marvel’?
I am going to start this article off by saying that this is just speculation. Marvel has yet to confirm any of the things mentioned in this article, other than by confirming Jude Law’s character name in Captain Marvel.
From the very first mention of Jude Law’s casting for the film, speculation ran rampant about whether or not the actor is Mar-Vell in the film. Marvel has denied that Law is Mar-Vell. Law himself denies the claim as well. So, who the hell is Yon-Rogg?
Yon-Rogg’s first appearance was in Marvel Super Heroes #12. He is historically a major villain of Mar-Vell and Carol Danvers. His many schemes in the comics attempt to discredit Mar-Vell and even kill him a few times.
He is also responsible for the psyche-magnetron that gives Carol Danvers her powers. In a few brief moments from the Captain Marveltrailers, it appears that the psyche-magnetron is in the film. So could Law be Yon-Rogg, a secondary villain in the film?
Looking back on the first announcement of Jude Law joining the MCU, it said that Law would be Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) mentor Dr Walter Lawson. If you are a fan of the comics, this name should be very familiar to you. It is the name that Mar-Vell used when he was spying on the Earth.
Does this mean that Yon-Rogg will be Mar-Vell in the film? It wouldn’t be the first time that Marvel combined two characters for the MCU. Merging both characters would also add a bit more depth to an already interesting secondary villain in Captain Marvel.
There is one final thing to note about the casting of Law and the name of his character. It is peculiar that Yon-Rogg and Mar-Vell have the same number of letters in them, and both have the hyphen in the same place.
So, who will Jude law be in the film? That is an answer that may have to wait until Captain Marvel hits theaters. A recent tie-in book Starforce on the Rise confirms that Law is Yon-Rogg, but this could be another ruse by Marvel. It could also still mean that elements of Mar-Vell are included in Yon-Rogg’s character.
Will Mar-Vell appear in the film? If the character shows up, he is a mystery to fans. Did the studio secretly cast someone? We will see, when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8.
