James Gunn is no stranger to handling big projects. The expectations for Guardians of the Galaxy were big, and now with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 destroying the box office, Gunn cemented himself with Marvel. Before the opening of GOTG Vol. 2, Gunn announced that he will write and direct the third installment of the franchise. In a recent interview he says that he is at the helm of the MCU after the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
In an interview with IGN, Gunn says that he is expanding his role with Marvel. It appears Gunn will be in charge of the development of the Marvel Cosmic Universe. He is working with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige oversee the big transition:
“We talk about it all the time. It’s already a part of what I’m doing with Marvel and the conversations that Kevin and I have every day. When we’re talking about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3,’ and that story, that’s a story that will lead to other stories. It’s innate to the DNA that that’s the end of a trilogy but it’s the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe. That’s a part of what I’m doing now.”
Gunn says that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will jump several years into the future, and will wrap up the current Guardians storyline. What new characters is Gunn looking to bring to the MCU?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently in theaters.
