Jared Leto Talks About the Lost Joker Footage in Suicide Squad

Jared Leto was out doing promotion for Suicide Squad throughout the weekend. The film has broken records for the month of July, but recently has come under fire from critics. Although the film is entertaining, it has garnered criticism for its soundtrack, villain, plot arrangement, and its cuts. One person extremely vocal about the cuts is Jared Leto, who was surprised to find that most of his Joker scenes were cut from the film.

The theatrical cut of Suicide Squad had the Joker as more of a fill in character, with his own motivations that  counter how the character is in comics. The Joker was never in love with Harley Quinn, rather he had her trapped in an abusive relationship. He loves her worship of him. Leto is upset because the cuts to his role, diminish the lengths he went to become the Joker.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1 (via EW), Leto continues to say that his scenes were drastically cut down:

“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene, it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity. Because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie… If I were to die tomorrow, maybe the studio would roll something out. Rated R or rated X performance in there somewhere.”

Leto is eager to return to the role, but after the criticism he has gotten, it sounds like he is unsure about his return:

“It feels like there could be more to come… I think it entirely depends on the response of the public. If they respond to this Joker, I could imagine The Joker coming back, but if they don’t I certainly wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome.”

Leto has stated that he would like to have a stand-alone Joker film. When he will be back is uncertain, but assumptions are that he and Harley will return in the Batman stand-alone film, and we could potentially see them in the Justice League film as well.

Justice League hits theaters on November 17, 2017.
