Fans want a live-action Halo series. For over a decade, any mention of a potential film garnered instant celebration. Many times over, news came, time passed, and yet no Halo film ended up in theaters. At one time, Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings) was set to direct, but still, no film came. Now, after four long years in development, Halo is finally coming to Showtime.
Showtime has picked up a 10-episode script based on the award-winning Microsoft video game Halo. Kyle Killen (Awake) Serves as executive producer and showrunner, with Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is set to direct a few episodes including the pilot. Wyatt also will serve as executive producer. Other notable executive producers on the show are Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Scott Pennington.
Showtime teams with Microsoft/343 Industries and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to produce the series. This is Showtimes most-ambitious show to date. The key issue with the project in the past was Microsoft’s insistence on being able to have an ample amount of control over the project. It appears that Showtime is giving them just that.
Halo is Microsoft’s biggest property and put the Xbox on the map in the console gaming world. By the numbers, Halo sold over 77 million copies and grossed over $5 million.
The biggest question is where in the game’s story the show will start. Will it chronicle the beginnings of the human-covenant war? Will it begin in the early days of the Spartan-II program with the abduction and replacement of children for the program? Could the show pick up with John 117 a.k.a. the Master Chief as he tackles the covenant threat with a new arsenal of gear?
Halo could be a game changer for Showtime, who is looking to have a series that solidifies their brand among other cable network heavy-hitters such as HBO with Game of Thrones. Will 343 be able to bring a truly great Halo experience to the small screen? Although their games show promise, ever since the studio took over after Bungie’s departure, something is missing.
