Still reeling in the wake of dismal reviews and revenue for Justice League, DC is still trying to move forward. There is still life in the Warner Brothers cinematic comic franchise, but something big has to give. One such move could be to make the much talked about Birds of Prey movie, which would bring together Harley Quinn with an all-girl cast fo DC badasses. Margot Robbie (who plays Harley Quinn in the DCEU) has a novel idea for the film.
In a recent statement to Collider, Margot Robbie says that Birds of Prey should be something different. Something that the film comic world is still missing, “an R-rated girl gang film.” According to Robbie, Quinn should never have a stand-alone film, because the character relies on peer interaction:
I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on-screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.
Birds of Prey is a film that could work well for the DCEU. Although the Suicide Squad film was a severely flawed film, Robbie shined as Quinn. The DCEU is still not dead, and with Aquaman coming soon, Shazam, Wonder Woman 2, and a feature film for The Flash (Flashpoint) in production, the franchise could finally find its bearings.
The DCEU film schedule has Aquaman hitting theaters on December 21, Shazam in April 2019, Wonder Woman 2 on November 1, 2019, and no release date is in yet for Flashpoint.
