The Transformers franchise will take a huge hit after Transformers: The Last Knight. Both director Michael Bay and Mark Wahlberg have said that this film will be their last. Bay is no stranger to attempting to leave the franchise, but this is the first time that Wahlberg has expressed his intentions to depart.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Wahlberg stated that he is a skeptical as everyone else about Bay actually leaving Transformers:
“It’s one of those things where Michael has built this entire universe right, and he will decide what he wants to do and how he wants to do it.
Right now he says he doesn’t want to do another film and he says that after every film because they are so difficult to make and he pretty much has to do it single-handedly, even with all the help that he has because all of the movie is in his mind.
So he’ll decide that and I would be hard pressed to see him walk away and put it in somebody else’s control and care.”
This isn’t the first time that we have heard about Bay’s obsession with projects. Letting franchises go is a hard thing to do, just ask Ridley Scott. He has refused to stay from his overall vision of the Alien franchise, and he is single-handedly burning it to the ground. Bay is talented, but has continued to come up shot with Transformers.
Bay will not be in the directors chair for the first Transformers spin-off film Bumblebee. That film will have Travis Knight in the seat. As far as the state of the Transformers franchise, with dismal numbers at the box office a change is definitely on the horizon.
Transformers: The Last Knight is currently in theaters.
Bumblebee is shooting for a June 8, 2018 release date.
