Nathan Fillion-Led ‘Uncharted’ Fan Film Toys With Future Possibilities

Uncharted Short Film, Allan Ungar

A recent fan film inspired by the Uncharted video games is a taste fo what the Sony film should actually be. The 15-min short film stars Nathan Fillion and comes from the mind of director Allan Ungar (Gridlocked). Fillion is perfect for the role.

Fans want Fillion to land this role. Unfortunately, Sony is aiming for an origin tale starring Tom Holland (Infinity War). Could this film change the studio’s mind?

The short film had an almost-nothing budget and fits the look and feel of the games. Fan reception of the clip is extremely positive, so will Sony bite and realize that Fillion is perfect for the role? Although this isn’t a proof of concept short, it does open the possibility on what a true-to-game adaptation could look like.

Uncharted Short Film, Allan UngarThis might be what Sony is looking for. Director Allan Ungar spoke about the possibility of Sony picking up the shortt. In an interview with Slashfilm, He says:

“When we sat down and I pitched this to Nathan, I said, ‘Look, regardless of what happens, I’m going to be totally thrilled if this just lives and dies as a well-received fan film, bringing something to the fans that they’ve been wanting to see for the last decade.

That being said, the best case scenario for us, if we felt this way, is that maybe someone asks if we can continue this story and Sony was interested in exploring it.’

Uncharted Short Film, Allan UngarI think right now, we’re at a very interesting time in this business where you have cross-platform distribution. You’ve got Marvel and DC, who are going from theatrical to digital to network. You’ve got different actors playing the same character. Look at Gotham, and look at the DC films.

You’ve got two people playing Batman. You have the same thing on the Arrow show. You’ve got Viola Davis playing Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, and another actress on the show. I could go on and on.

Obviously, we would be thrilled to see if there’s a world that existed where we could continue telling this story. But we will be very happy knowing that it ended with everybody loving it, and everybody saying thank you for doing this.”

The role is familiar for Fillion, who played Cpt. Malcolm Reynolds in Joss Whedon’s Firefly and its spinoff Serenity. Drake and Reynolds have a flair for sarcasm and shooting-from-the-cuff. It would be the perfect casting for an Uncharted film. Is Sony willing to shift the focus of the franchise? Will we see Nathan Fillion in the role of Drake again?
