Lucasfilm and Ubisoft are teaming-up on a new open-world story-driven Star Wars game. Massive Entertainment takes the reins of the new game. Massive Entertainment’s responsible for Tom Clancy’s The Division, World in Conflict, Far Cry 3, and Assassin’s Creed Revelations.
The development team will be headed by David Polfeldt and Julian Gerighty, who also serves as the creative director. The game will harness the Snowdrop game engine.
The announcement comes in the wake of a Lucasfilm Games declaring plans to allow all types of developers to team-up with them on Star Wars. There’s also plan for a new Indiana Jones in the near future.
Although Lucasfilm’s shifting gears a bit from working solely with Electronic Arts, Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly says that a number of project are still in development with EA.
EA’s recently released Star Wars games Battlefront, Jedi: Fallen Order, and Squadrons. Only one of the three games, Jedi: Fallen Order, saw acclaim with fans.
This marks a new direction for Star Wars games. Lucasfilm giving other studios the right to work on SW opens up the pallet of storytelling that can only come from studios competing to produce the best quality SW game possible.
It’s a situation that leads to fantastic potential for fans, which also means that better quality games are on the horizon.
