‘The Mandalorian’ Aims at a Darker, Freakier ‘Star Wars’

Although there’s been a lot of content related to The Mandalorian released, we’ve yet to see any footage from Jon Favreau’s Star Wars television show. How long will we have to wait for the first trailer for the massive launch title for Disney+?

With D23 beginning tomorrow, there is a sure bet that the show’s first trailer will hit tomorrow when the Disney Expo kicks off.

In anticipation of the show’s panel over the weekend, show runner Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Chef)spoke to THR about the show, comparing it to Mad Max and a “darker, freakier side of Star Wars.”

The Mandalorian takes place shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi. The series stars Pedro Pascal as a wandering Mandalorian soldier in the outer reaches of the galaxy.

Gina Carano is a former Rebel Trooper, Cara Dune, who is having a hard time adapting to civilian life. Carl Weathers is Greef, a man who runs a group a bounty hunters. The group hires the Mandalorian for a job.

Favreau went on to talk about the show’s aim:

“There’s a certain look that the Mandalorian lead character has, there’s a size that the spaceship is, there’s a scale that lines up with the original trilogy.

I’m trying to evoke the aesthetics of not just the original trilogy [and] not just the first film, but the first act of the first film.

What was it like on Tatooine? What was going on in that cantina? That has fascinated me since I was a child, and I love the idea of the darker, freakier side of Star Wars, the Mad Max aspect of Star Wars.”

Disney+ is emerging and there’s an opportunity to tell a story that’s bigger than television. But you don’t have the same expectations that a big holiday release has. Which to me isn’t that type of Star Wars that comes out of me.

The type of Star Wars that I’m inspired to tell is a smaller thing with new characters.”

According to Favreau, the series is exactly how he planned it. He wrote four episodes before he had a deal:

“I wanted to do this but only if they wanted to do the version that I wanted to do.”

Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, Nick Nolte and the voice of Taika Waititi star in the series.

Waititi, Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow and Bryce Dallas Howard directed episodes of season 1.
