Big Game #1 is the culmination of over a decade of work from Millarworld. It promises to bring superheroes, assassins, spies, magic users and more together to uncover a deadly secret from the world’s past that will change the course of the future.
Mark Millar is the brain behind the story while the incredible art comes from Pepe Larraz. There will be spoilers within the article but not for this issue. Instead, they’re for past Millarworld comics, including Nemesis Reloaded. So, if you haven’t read them yet, it’s best to stay away. However, if you’ve already read it, you can read on without fear.
Now let’s see what Millarworld has in store for us in one of the biggest comic book crossovers.
Big Game #1 doesn’t introduce all of the crossover characters right away. However, it treats us to several, including our newly minted Ambassadors. Now’s the best time to tell you if you haven’t read that series yet you should. Meanwhile, Nemesis is learning more from the Fraternity who have reshaped the world to their image. With this, all superheroes are dead and forgotten, their memories left only to the pages of comic books and the silver screen.
This is where we get into the spoilers for Nemesis Reloaded so consider this your last warning.
Who’s behind this Fraternity? It’s none other than Wesley Gibson, the protagonist of Wanted. See, it’s already an exciting crossover; one of Millarworld’s first characters is at the epicentre of the villainous arc. I can’t wait to see Eggsy Unwin and Dave Lizewski meet (if they do) but I’d settle for Eggsy and Mindy (Hit-Girl) too.
Big Game #1 creates tension, unpeeling layer after layer of mysteries, bringing in new and old characters to merge into an interesting cliffhanger that sets the stage for a thrilling ride. It also focuses on its character work while progressing the arc at a steady pace. Ultimately, it makes us want to come back and see what happens next.
Pepe Larraz’s art feels like a culmination of what’s come before. It almost feels like there’re styles from each comic blended into one to create the ultimate Millarworld experience. Once the story kicks into more action I can’t wait to see what Pepe does with it; I can already tell I’m going to love his art.
If you’re a Millarworld fan, Big Game is for you, and if you’ve only read a couple of the comics in the universe you have a lot of catching up to do!
