The Magic Order is one of the several comic series currently coming from Millarworld. Mark Millar writes this unique take on the magic world while Stuart Immonen provides the art. The first volume of The Magic Order focuses on a fight over a powerful book and the organisation known as The Magic Order.
The Magic Order Vol 2 #1 sets up a new story. However, it doesn’t give the reader time to breathe. From the word go, we know something bad has happened. To make matters worse, we know the world is going to pay for it.
Throwing us into the deep end straight away is a great way to hook a reader. It invites us to keep reading as the mystery unfolds. After the fantastic first volume of The Magic Order, Mark Millar has a challenge on his hands.
However, if the first issue is anything to go by, then it won’t be a problem. Already, we’re seeing the power of the new villains. From the little we see of them, they are dangerous and extremely powerful. Through this, the reader will worry about their beloved heroes.
That’s not to say everything is doom and gloom. The Magic Order Vol 2 #1 starts at the deep end but it doesn’t continue with it. Instead, it shows us the wizards in their downtime, having fun. It’s good to see this side of them as it’s not going to last long.
We’re also given a quick look into how Cordelia’s doing as the leader of the Order. Something I’ve learned is to always expect the unexpected when it comes to Mark Millar. This appears to be no different.
Now, let’s talk about the art by Stuart Immonen. Each character is clearly defined in a way we recognise them whenever they’re on the page. He also captures the most minute details, including blemishes, blushing and drool. They say the best art evokes emotion, and that’s something The Magic Order has in spades.
There’s one panel with silhouettes that’s still in my mind. I won’t say what happens in it to avoid spoilers. But, it’s certainly a panel that evokes horror and gasping. Putting it next to another panel with a smiling child creates a macabre and irreverent juxtaposition.
The Magic Order Vol 2 #1 is a spellbinding beginning to what appears to be a darker sequel with the promise of more fun and destruction. If you’ve yet to read the first volume, you should. Everything you think you know about wizards will change.
