Scream recently released its fifth entry this year with a requel that pokes fun in its usual irreverent way. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet it was a success with critics and audiences alike. It saw the return of fan-favorites Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley while introducing new characters portrayed by Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding. It was recently confirmed the foursome is returning for the sixth Scream movie.
Whether we’ll see the return of the OG characters is up in the air. Although, Courtney Cox has said she’s seen a script. Either she’s in it or was shown the script due to her lineage in the series. Be aware this article contains spoilers for Scream 1 to Scream 5.
The premise sees the survivors of the recent movie moving to a different town, hoping to escape the shadow of Woodsboro. However, as Scream 2 and Scream 3 have shown us it doesn’t matter where you go, there will always be a Ghostface. That’s why this return is even more exciting given we’ll see them outside of their home.
Something fans were clamoring for in Scream was the return of a character from Scream 4. We did get one in the guise of Judy Hicks (Marley Shelton). Unfortunately, Judy met her untimely end at the hands of Ghostface. In Scream 6 we’re trading one character from the fourth movie for another. Hayden Panettiere is returning as Kirby Reed. It’s time to save the cheerleader, save the… sorry, that’s the wrong fandom.
Kirby Reed is the only survivor from movie four who wasn’t from the original trilogy or in the police. After the fourth movie fans weren’t sure what she was up to. However, Scream 2022 gave us a slight hint. In a scene where Jack Quaid’s Richie is watching YouTube. An interview with Kirby pops up in the recommended tab. Knowing what this franchise is like, preparing ourselves for the possibility Kirby doesn’t make it out of the movie alive isn’t wrong. Hopefully, she won’t but the last movie features a death that shocked fans and cast alike.
It’s great to see Hayden back and it’ll open up an interesting can of worms. How does Kirby react to these new survivors? How does she react to Sam being the daughter of one of the original killers? Anyway, the main point to make is this: welcome back Hayden Panettiere. We can’t wait to see Kirby’s return to the Scream universe.
