The first footage of Spider-Man: Homecoming was screened at the San Diego Comic-Con this past week. Although Marvel has yet to release the clip online, reports about the scene are good. Spider-Man made his Marvel big screen début in Captain America: Civil War, essentially stealing the show. Fans are eagerly awaiting the footage of Tom Holland as the Web Slinger.
The scene played out like a John Hughes film, set to Joan Jet’s Bad Reputation. The last shot of the footage was of The Vulture, the film’s villain. Check out the description of the scene, courtesy of io9:
The clip, which is not online, starts with Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation,” against a montage of high school yearbook photos. It says that all heroes have a beginning, and we see Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, everyone. Then it transitions to today.
Peter Parker is sitting in class with his laptop, watching a YouTube clip of himself fighting Giant Man from Civil War, not paying attention to the teacher. Of course, the teacher calls on him. Peter knows the answer instantly.
From there, the trailer is cut like a school schedule; black screen and colorful text with a time and class. So, for example, 2:30pm: Women’s Studies. Sowe see Peter and his friend staring at a bunch of girls. Peter says, “Maybe we should stop staring before it gets creepy.” The camera pans over to a character played by Zendaya, who has been watching them the whole time. “Too late, it’s already creepy.”
4pm: Web Design. Peter is in chemistry class, concocting something in a drawer. When he puts his pencil in it, it’s a super strong, sticky substance. He then gets yelled at and closes the door. (Note: These times may not be right, but you get the point.)
Later he’s in a study hall with Martin Starr as the teacher. He gets a text and immediately says, “I have to go.”
“Go where, Peter?” asks Zendaya, very curiously, Cut to a montage of Peter running and jumping around, him as Spider-Man crawling up a building, running on a huge truck, and more. “I’m just kidding,” she adds.
We then see Peter and his friend in a class doing a very elaborate handshake and finally, the last shot is the Vulture, flying down some kind of tunnel.
According to first reports, fans cheered at the clip and seem to be happy with Marvel’s direction of Spider-Man. Their representation of Spider-Man seems perfect. The Vulture looks spectacular, and has a very mechanical feel to the design.
