Hulu is moving all-in on Marvel’s Runaways, despite not having finished its first season. However, things look bleak for the return of Marvel’s Inhumans on ABC. In a recent statement, ABC’s president indicates that the show may not be renewed for a second season. With dismal reviews, the Inhumans looks doomed, and Marvel’s royal family will get the axe.
Hulu has announced that Marvel’s Runaways is returning for a second season, along with thier new hit Future Man. This is great news, as both shows are a breathe of fresh air. Unfortunately for Marvel’s other new series, things are not looking very good. In a recent interview with reporters at the Television Critic’s Association winter press tour, ABC president, Channing Dungey talks about the future of its shows, citing that she was “cautiously optimistic” about the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Once Upon a Time. Both shows were moved to Friday nights, a move that hasn’t seemed to hurt either program.
The talked took a turn when Inhumans was brought up. The comments don’t seem promising for a possible second season return:
It didn’t perform for us at the level that we would’ve wanted. We haven’t made any official decision yet about what we’re going to pick up in May, but I will say that the numbers, unfortunately, were less exciting for us than we hoped they would be…We developed a couple things this season that we don’t think are going to end up going forward, so we’re going to look really carefully about what we do next, because the idea for us is to come up with something that works very well for both Marvel and ABC.
The statement doesn’t mean that the show is officially dead, but it does show that things aren’t looking good. Inhumans faced backlash from fans where the show was criticized for less-than-stellar CGI, poor acting, and lackluster show production. Dungey went on to say that although Inhumans didn’t do well, the ABC-Marvel relationship isn’t damaged. ABC is currently developing a reboot of the classic television show The Greatest American Hero. No release date has been announced. According to Dungey, ABC isn’t shying away from superhero shows anytime soon.
