Why ‘Aquaman’ Doesn’t Feature Any ‘Justice League’ Cameos

There is no doubting that James Wan’s Aquaman is a hit! Jason Momoa shines as Arthur Curry, in one of the best DC films to date. One thing that was notably missing from the film was its lack of ties to the greater DCEU.

Director James Wan had a vision for this film. From the very beginning, Warner Brothers gave him free rein to make the film great. In order to do that, Wan needed to forget about the larger DCEU. He wanted to focus only on Atlantis and Arthur Curry’s journey.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wan says that there is a very good reason that no other Justice League members appear in Aquaman:

I wanted to keep the story to the world of Aquaman and not have to worry about what other characters are doing in their films and how that would affect us. Just thought the simplest way was to keep it clean — keep it simple and let it be an Aquaman story.

I told them I understand and respect that its part of a bigger universe but at the end of the day I have to tell the story I want to tell, and I want to develop the character as well.

It is an interesting angle. I don’t think cameos would hurt Aquaman in any capacity. This is the first time that DC’s version of Atlantis appears on-screen, and things couldn’t be better.

Once home to the most advanced civilization on Earth, the city of Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-hungry King Orm.

With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people — and then the surface world. Standing in his way is Aquaman, Orm’s half-human, half-Atlantean brother and true heir to the throne.

With help from royal counselor Vulko, Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlan and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep.

Aquaman is currently in theaters.
