A few new details regarding Star Wars: The Last Jedi are coming down the pipe. The first one talks about the mystery that shrouds the lineage of Supreme Leader Spoke. For months fans have speculated how he fits into the Star Wars universe, and whether we have seen him in past films or books. The rumors are really rampant, and claim that Snoke is everyone from Darth Vader to Mace Windu. Who Spoke is one of the biggest Star Wars mysteries since the release of The Force Awakens.
You would expect Disney and Lucasfilm to address this in the upcoming Star Wars movie The Last Jedi. According to Vanity Fair’s David Kemp in a recent Reddit AMA, director Ryan Johnson doesn’t touch on Snoke’s lineage in The Last Jedi:
I asked Rian Johnson about Snoke—Who/what is he?—and Rian was fairly up front in saying that Snoke is not a character he particularly gets into in The Last Jedi. Hmmm.
That’s an interesting comment. Why wouldn’t this be addressed in The Last Jedi? On another note, Mark Hamill isn’t really happy with the way that Luke Skywalker is portrayed in The Last Jedi. This could mean a number of things, but it sounds like Rian Johnson’s vision might be a bit different from what fans are expecting. We already know that the film will be darker than The Force Awakens. Hamill revealed his issues about Luke characterization to Vanity Fair, saying:
Likewise, after reading Rian Johnson’s script for The Last Jedi, Hamill said, “I at one point had to say to Rian, ‘I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character. Now, having said that, I have gotten it off my chest, and my job now is to take what you’ve created and do my best to realize your vision.’
Hamill noted that he has the utmost respect for Johnson and The Force Awakens’s director, J.J. Abrams, and is pleased with how both films have turned out. He just wanted to be heard.
Does this mean that fans aren’t going to be pleased with Luke Skywalker’s big return? Has time and loss begun to wear him down? This can’t be good for The Last Jedi and our heroes. Hopefully the Jedi Master recovers by the end of the film.
