Todd McFarlane has tried to get another Spawn movie made for quite some time now. New Line screwed up the 1997 film that starred Michael Jai White and John Leguziamo, but the film did have minor success at the box office. There has been word of another film for years, a police procedural starring Sam and Twitch, with Spawn only acting in the shadows. This is a sequel that was given the go ahead right after the first film exited theaters, but has been stuck in a development holding pattern for over a decade.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Todd McFarlane talks about the new script he has worked on, and dubs it “a dark, R-rated, scary, badass sort of script.” McFarlane seems confident that a studio will green light the project, so we should expect to see news about it very soon:
“The world’s going to be real, except for one thing that’s going to move. You’re never going to see a dude in a rubber suit….This is going to be my Jaws shark. In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn. Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a super villain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost.”
Spawn was one of my favorite comics growing up, but with the approach that McFarlane is taking, I still remain skeptical. Will a superhero movie work if the title character is never seen throughout the film? If Spawn will only act as Jaws did in his film, will that make the budget for the follow-up cheap enough for New Line?
It’s hard to believe that a true Spawn film couldn’t work with the current superhero film push in Hollywood. It is a property with an extensive story that reaches from the depths of Hell, all the way up into Heaven. Until the film hits theaters we are left with the bad 1997 movie, a great animated series from HBO, and this lovely little YouTube fan film. Check out Spawn: The Recall:
