Dan Aykroyd’s recent statements about his disappointment of the Ghostbusters reboot seemed to spell the end of the franchise. This may not be true, according to Ivan Reitman, Ghostbusters co-founder. Reitman thinks he may have a plan how the Ghostbusters universe might be saved, and how it wouldn’t involve another reboot.
Reitman took the higher road in recent comments about the Paul Feig-directed 2016 Ghostbusters movie. Instead of pointing out the bad things with the new film, and the missed steps it took, he feels optimistic that the franchise can still be saved. In a recent interview with Super News Live, Reitman played out his plan for future GB films:
“What we’ve been doing a lot of is thinking about the franchise rights for ‘Ghostbusters.’ Because ‘Ghostbusters,’ that idea doesn’t have to just take place in New York, it can happen over the world.
I think it would be really cool to see Korean ghosts or Chinese ghosts. All those great traditions in the world have all these tales and things those people are afraid of. To have a sort of local group of Ghostbusters that tie with the head office in New York would be fun.”
Does this mean that the franchise is still alive? Not necessarily. It does mean that the studio has not completely shut the doors on it yet. Reitman says the franchise is still very alive. He feels that some reformatting is needed for future films to be successful. He says:
“We’re doing a lot of work about where do we go next with ‘Ghostbusters.’ I think one thing that fans have clearly wanted, and so did I, that somehow we tie the worlds together. I think it was a little awkward that it wasn’t connected, and we certainly heard a lot from everybody out there. So I would definitely want to connect to all of that.”
There is no word whether Sony Pictures feels the same way as Reitman, but at least the idea may still survive.
