If you haven’t figured it out yet, this entire article is full of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ spoilers. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, it really would be wise not to continue any further!
If you saw Avengers: Infinity War already then you know that Thanos succeeds in his plans to wipe out half of the population of Earth, including a few of Marvel’s biggest and brightest superheroes. The moment was shocking and was something that even comic book fans didn’t see coming. Marvel is a movie-making machine and is constantly releasing future schedules for their films years in advance.
Kevin Feige also recently commented on the status of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, talking about the villain and the setting for the sequel. Knowing there is a Spider-Man sequel coming soon, lessens the impact of that character disappearing at the end of Infinity War. You already know that Peter Parker will return, most likely in Avengers 4. The same problem shows up with T’Challa disappearing as well. (Marvel has already announced Black Panther 2.) With Spider-Man and T’Challa both being dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, how will the studio bring these characters back?
The easy answer is with the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers 4, but could Marvel do it another way? Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 hits theaters on July 5, 2019, two months after Avengers 4. Does that mean that Marvel and Sony aren’t planning on advertising the sequel until right before the film launches and after A4 hits theaters? Could the secret to bringing all of the MCU characters back lie in the subheading or Avengers 4, something Marvel is keeping a secret for the time being.
Peter Parker is a Sophomore in High School during Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Infinity War takes place two years after that, so Peter is now a Senior. Will Avengers 4 use time travel to keep Peter Parker in High School for Homecoming 2 and maybe even a film beyond that? Feige’s recent statement about the sequel suggests a global setting, so could this be Peter’s Senior trip, or is he traveling after High School? Marvel producer’s previously stated that they wanted to have a Spidey film for every year he was in school, so either this has changed, or it will definitely have something to do with time travel.
The sequel could also take place before the events of Infinity War. This is what the MCU is doing with Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp. Will Sony hold off on the promotion of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 until after Avengers 4? Could we see a new Spider-Man emerge so soon? It is a long-shot, but maybe the sequel follows Miles Morales. Most of these answers will have to wait until Avengers 4 hits theaters.
