Rogue One director Gareth Edwards hit SXSW this past week to talk about his Star Wars film. He addressed many things about the making of Rogue One, including rewrites to the end of the film and the original ending of the movie. He also took a minute to discuss all the deleted content from the film, and whether we will ever get to see any of it.
In an interview with Fandango, Edwards says that sadly we may never see any of the cuts from Rogue One, due to the nature of the cuts and reshoots:
“There’s not an individual scene that you can drag and drop and put on a Blu-ray. There are little things that would come and go during the process of post-production, but they’re not scenes. They’re more moments within the scenes or a single shot. So it’s impossible to be able to do that, and that’s why the decision was made.
The stuff people talk about, like what they saw in the trailer, they’re not scenes you can just put on a DVD. They’re moments within scenes and threads, and you pull a thread and it all changes. It was changing the whole time. It’s not like there was one version and then there was this other version — it was like this thing that incrementally evolved constantly through all of post-production and didn’t stop until there was a gun at our heads and we were forced to release the movie.”
It is sad that we will never see the cuts from Rogue One. Word from a lot of the cast, was that the scenes were all shot with multiple versions. Any deleted cuts we could see, would only be pieces of scenes and almost not worth the time. In the link above, Edwards also says that the entire ending of the film was altered, and they essentially made two locations one in post production. This is why there are really no complete scene cuts, as they would have to be spliced back together.
