Matt Reeves The Batman hoisted in $128.5 million domestically and another $120 million at the global box office over the weekend. It’s the biggest opening weekend of 2022. Batman’s the second film to pass the $100 million opening weekend mark during the pandemic era.
The other film is Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Batman split audiences, but the general consensus is positive, with an A- CinemaScore. Reviews for Matt Reeves’s film are good, in spite of the film’s darker subject matter.
The runtime for The Batman clocks in at right under the three-hour mark, which would limit the number of showings per day. The film doesn’t have a ton of competition currently in theaters or releasing anytime soon. The only other big film in cinemas for during March is Tom Holland’s Uncharted.
Uncharted just crossed the $100 million mark domestically, with a decent $271 million global box office grab. The next film that could hurt the box office numbers of these two films doesn’t drop until March 25 (The Lost City).
April sees the releases of Morbius (April 1), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (April 8), Ambulance (April 8), and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (April 15).
Do these recent box office numbers indicate that the domestic and global markets are finally showing signs of normalcy? It’s quite possible.
