When Hollywood goes looking for a remake, there is no film that is too sacred or considered off-limits. This was a statement that proved true recently when word came that a Splash remake is in the works. Splash is a 1980s comedy starring Tom Hanks and directed by Ron Howard. In the film, Tom Hanks is a young man who falls in love with a mermaid played by Daryl Hannah.
It was a film that made young boys believe in true love, or at the very least believe in the stunning beauty of Daryl Hannah. The reboot comes from Disney Pictures, and features a twist to the original tale. In the reboot of Splash, Channing Tatum is rumored to be the mermaid, while Jillian Bell will be the young woman who falls in love with him. Marja-Lewis Ryan is churning out a killer script, and Howard, Tatum, Brian Grazer, Reid Carolin and Peter Kieran are producing.
At the première for their new film Inferno, Hanks and Howard took a moment to talk to the Associated Press. Hanks was asked if he would be willing to appear in the reboot of the film, and Hanks had a priceless response:
“No one asked me! I’m all in favor of it. Why not? That’s fine! I figure if they were really going to be bold, I would come back as Allen Bauer, and I would go off with Channing Tatum. That would be a bold movie, and I am suggesting it right now. Put THAT on your AP wire.”
Howard also talked about how much he helped on the film. Check out the video below:
I don’t think that Hanks’ spin on the original Splash tale is a bit further than Disney wants to spin it, but it could make for one interesting comedy.
