Ryan Reynolds and Tim Miller Part Ways Over ‘Deadpool 2’ Direction

Over the weekend News broke that said that director Tim Miller was leaving Deadpool 2 over creative differences with the studio and Ryan Reynolds, the film’s star. The first report stated that the main reason for Miller leaving was due to tone and casting differences. More directly, over the casting of Cable and the tone of the sequel.

According to the report, Miller wanted to cast Kyle Chandler as Cable, but Reynolds and the studio disagreed. Miller also wanted to change the tone of Deadpool 2, making it a big budget superhero film and discarding the humor and crudeness of the first film. His version would be more stylized, and less of the edginess and vulgarity that the first one capitalized on. Reynolds disagreed with this approach, and the studio sided with the star.

In a new report from The Wrap, a sequel has been in the works even before the first film began filming. When this news dropped at CinemaCon in April, Tim Miller was already having creative disagreements with Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Ryan Reynold, and both writers wanted a sequel that was in the same vein of the first film: A crude, raunchy comedy, that housed small-scale action sequences, and loads of attitude.

Millers version would follow the template of most other big scale superhero films, and will triple the budget of the first film. It would have been full of big action sequences and plenty of explosions. The report goes on to say that Reynolds version will stick closer to the budget of the first film. The budget news has been discredited by a few sources online, but it is hard to dismiss the other issues.

Production is now slated to begin sometime in the next year, hitting theaters in 2018.
