Who is Mary Jane Watson in Marvel’s first Spidey movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming? For months, fans have speculated that Disney star Zendaya was cast for the role, although the part she auditioned for was for ‘Michelle’. Who is Michelle? Could she be just another classmate of Peter Parker, or an entirely new love interest for Spider-Man?

Marvel and Zendaya have both denied that she is Mary Jane Watson, but some feel that this is just smoke-and-mirrors. in a recent interview with The Hollywood ReporterZendaya talked about her role in the film and tested whether she truly was Mary Jane in the film. They asked her if her character is romantically involved with Peter Parker, and she said:

“No [laughs]. My character is not romantic. My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she’s so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like “My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not really on my level.” So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading. I like that. And I also like that I don’t really have to do anything for hair and makeup. I just get to walk in and walk out.”

Usually when a studio and the actor or actress confirm that they are not a certain character, you can bet that they aren’t going to be that character. That leaves the question open still then. Who is Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming?
